Mary L. Clapp

Mary Loring Clapp of Prides Crossing, Beverly, Massachusetts, died peacefully April 5, 2018 shortly after her 106th birthday.

She had been residing at Carleton-Willard Village in Bedford, Massachusetts for 25 years. She was born in Prides Crossing and spent her early years living there and in Boston.

She was the daughter of Augustus Peabody Loring Jr. and Rosamond Bowditch Loring. She attended the Lee School and Concord Academy and went to finishing school in Paris, France. She was married to Nathaniel Dudley Clapp in 1934 and lived happily with him in Prides Crossing from after World War II until his death in 1987.

She is survived by her children, Katharine Clapp Ruhl (Robert), Cleveland, Ohio, David D. Clapp (Linda), Boothbay Harbor, Maine, Nathaniel B. Clapp (Hester) Ipswich, Massachusetts, seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

She and her husband were avid sailors and cruised extensively on the Maine coast, eventually spending summers in the Boothbay, Maine region.

She was a member of the Nucleus Club of Boston and an active volunteer for the Widows’ Society (now The S.W.A.N. Society), The Cotting School, and the Beverly Farms Exchange.

Mary was kind, generous, compassionate and humorous, she will be greatly missed.

The memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2 p.m., at the Crowell Chapel in Manchester-by-the-Sea, 4 Rosedale Ave (off School Street), Massachusetts.
