Matt O’Brien scores first feature win of 35-year racing career
Wiscasset Speedway returned to action on Saturday night with an action-packed Group 2 program that included the lightning-fast NEMA Midgets and NEMA Lites.
The racing action kicked off with the first of two 30-lap features for the Portland Glass Strictly Streets. Brady Romano took off with the early lead, but trouble was on the horizon as Scott Eck and Landon Tapley collided, resulting in a caution. Romano remained strong on the restart but Ben Burgess was on the move, overtaking the lead on lap 10 as Joe Harriman followed in succession. Burgess maintained command following a mid-race restart, picking up his second win of the season in the division. Joe Harriman and Chuck Wagstaff (1st career podium) followed, completing the top 3.
Matt O’Brien won his qualifying heat for the NEMA Midgets and powered ahead with the early lead in the 30-lap feature. Just as the field was beginning to spread out, Brayden Egan came to a slow on the frontstretch on lap 13, resulting in a caution. O’Brien remained steadfast on the restart and sailed off into the sunset, picking up a long-awaited first feature victory of his 35-year racing career. O’Brien was met by many competitors, family and friends in Victory Lane, celebrating his career milestone. Mike Horn and Avery Stoehr rounded out the podium.
Kevin Greenhalgh and Jason Meservey went door-to-door for the early lead in the 25-lap feature for the Dale’s Cash Fuel Roadrunners. Gavin Gerow made it a 3-wide battle on lap 5, quickly overtaking the top spot. While Gerow pulled away, defending champion Kyle Enman entered the picture at halfway, securing the runner-up spot. Gerow held off Enman for his third consecutive victory in the division while Kevin Greenhalgh completed the top 3.
Frank Moulton pulled ahead with a commanding early lead in the 40-lap feature for the Wood Pellet Warehouse Late Models. Meanwhile, there was a 3-way battle for second behind him, with Chris Burgess taking the spot. Jon Emerson made his way to Burgess’ door on lap 27, securing the position. Frank Moulton was in his own zip code in closing laps of the race with a full straightaway lead. Daniel Harding was on the move as well as the laps wound down, advancing from fifth to third in the closing laps of the race. Frank Moulton sailed into the victory with Jon Emerson and Daniel Harding rounding out the podium.
Tiana Kibbe hopped out to the early lead in the 40-lap NEMA Lite feature. After a strong showing all day, she abruptly retired from the race on lap 5, sacrificing the lead to Randy Cabral. Joey Bailey was all over his tail with 10 to go and dove to his door with just two laps remaining, challenging for the top spot. Randy Cabral was able to hold him off, securing the victory. Drew Eldridge followed, completing the top 3.
Adam Chadbourne held the early advantage over Faith Cleaves in the 30-lap T&L Automotive Modified feature. Ryan Ripley was also on the move early, breaking the top 3 on lap 7. Chuck Colby was a powerhouse in the closing half of the race, pulling to Ryan Ripley’s door with just 4 laps to go. The following lap, Faith Cleaves and Ryan Ripley made contact while battling for position, resulting in Cleaves taking a spin on the frontstretch. Adam Chadbourne held strong on the restart, scoring his 80th career victory at Wiscasset Speedway. Chuck Colby and Ryan Ripley rounded out the podium.
The night concluded with a second 30-lap feature for the Strictly Streets. Matt Veinott got the upper hand over Brady Romano early, but a pile-up mid-pack brought the field back together. Drivers were 3-wide for the top spot on the restart, with Landon Tapley securing the lead. Chaos ensued mid-race as Chaz Briggs, Dan Morton, Justin Gailloux and others collided in turn 2, resulting in another caution. Landon Tapley pulled away on the restart as Josh St. Clair powered to second. Tapley was able to hold him off, scoring the feature victory. Mac Hannan, Jr. followed, completing the top 3.
This week is going to be another busy one at Wiscasset Speedway while the track hosts the Jeffrey Earnhardt Racing Experience on Thursday, followed by a loaded Group 1 program on Saturday, which will include the Senior Tour Auto Racers and 350SMAC Tour. The weekend will conclude with the annual “Summerfest” event on Sunday, benefiting the Maine Vintage Race Car Association.
In order to accommodate for the extra races on Saturday, the green flag will fly early at 3 p.m.
