Murrill M. Szucs Jr.

Murrill M. Szucs Jr. MD, 78, of Westport Island, died March 3, 2017 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Mike was born in Youngstown, Ohio on July 26, 1938, a son of Murrill M. and Mary Louise (Davis) Szucs Sr. MD.

Mike graduated from Ursuline High School in Youngstown, Ohio and earned degrees from Marquette University and Marquette Medical School. He did his residency at Maine Medical Center and earned a two-year fellowship in cardiology at Harvard Medical School. He entered the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War serving as the cardiologist at Chelsea Naval Hospital. On January 15, 1967 he married Theresa E. Pressey. In 1973 he started a private practice in Waterville where he worked until his retirement in 1998.

Mike was a member of All Saints Parish and the Elks Lodge of both Bath and Waterville. He served as president of the Arnold Trail Skeet Club and was a member of the five man state championship team in two gauges. Later he joined the Lincoln County Rifle Club. Baseball had always been a passion from his childhood to umpiring Babe Ruth. Mike was a diehard fan of the Cleveland Indians and Browns. He also enjoyed fishing, sailing and riding motorcycles.

He is survived by his wife, Theresa E. Szucs of Westport Island; two sons, Murrill “Mick” M. Szucs III of Snoqualmie, Washington and Stephen A. Szucs and his wife Penny J. of Nottingham, New Hampshire; one daughter, Angela M. Szucs of Brewer; one brother, David H. Szucs and his wife Charlotte T. of Akron, Ohio; one sister, Suzanne M. Gubser and her husband William, of Mentor, Ohio; two grandchildren, Skyler A. Szucs and Ashley E. Szucs, and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 9 at Daigle Funeral Home, 819 High Street, Bath. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Newcastle. A gathering of family and friends will follow at the Church Parish Hall. Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Newcastle in the spring. Mike was a fellow in the American Heart Association.
