New regional adult unified basketball team
Event Date
Thursday, May 21, 2026 - 06:30 pmParents, players, coaches and sponsors, in conjunction with the Boothbay Region YMCA and Special Olympics Maine (SOM), are pleased to announce the formation of a new adult unified basketball team for the region.
Unified basketball is a community-level extension of Unified Champions Club which promotes social inclusion, leadership, and friendship for athletes with and without disabilities. Local high schools have had teams for years, however, upon graduation, athletes have not had opportunities to continue their sport. Until now. The new team will join an ever-expanding network of basketball enthusiasts across the state, hosting regular season games as well as participating in playoff tournaments around the state We are seeking players, on-court partners, volunteers, sponsors and fans.
Our team will consist of players 18 years and older; on-court partners and volunteers of all ages and abilities. Please join us for the team’s inaugural meeting on Thursday, May 21 at 6:30 p.m. at the Boothbay Region YMCA (261 Townsend Ave., Boothbay Harbor), our new home court. At this meeting, the public is invited to meet the coaches (Tammy Blackman and Scott Carpenter), play some fun drills and enjoy a relaxed get-to-know-you pick up game. Information about weekly practices, games, regional and state tournaments will be provided. We will also choose a team name, a mascot and colors.
The team will be based from the Boothbay Y, but includes players and partners from Wiscasset, Alna, Damariscotta, Bristol, Warren, and points in between, anywhere within driving distance. Bath and Augusta have, or are forming, teams inland and to the south. Points north do not presently have teams – we welcome all for whom Boothbay is their closest option.
