New show! 'Andrea Peters: 35 Years of Color'
East Boothbay artist Andrea Peters has been with Gleason Fine Art for more than three decades. With each year’s new work, she has dazzled us with her passion for oil paints–her yellows sizzle, her reds pop, and her blues are breath-taking.
For this summer’s show, “35 Years of Color,” which opens on Aug. 6 and runs through Sept. 8, we decided to give her many fans a treat. With Andrea’s help, we have chosen outstanding paintings from across her stellar career, including several early paintings from her first days with Gleason Fine Art.
Andrea says of oil paints: “They have such flow. I can capture my energy or the energy of the place, the very spirit of the place, with oils."
One arts writer, the late Phil Isaacson, the highly respected Portland newspapers art critic, loved Andrea’s use of color: “Peters’ Maine coast wriggles with color. Hues pile up in layers. Her style is gestural, spontaneous, and that quality builds a visual tempo. The Maine coast in Peters’s hands has become a center of visual energy.”
The world Andrea paints is right outside her Little River, East Boothbay, home and studio–salty inlets, mossy ledges, towering spruces, and lush flower and vegetable gardens. Andrea is Italian by heritage, so tomatoes and basil have to compete with tulips, poppies, daisies, lupines, and daylilies. Andrea’s paintings pulse with color. Drifts of golden daylilies and white daisies spill over mauve ledges. Stands of spikey blue lupines are punctuated with brilliant red poppies. Her seas are painted with myriad shades of blue, while her big, puffy clouds are encircled in jaunty pinks and yellows.
Andrea’s paintings are a tribute to her imagination and skilled hands. Her art is a perfect expression of one woman’s delight in everything around her. Please join us on Friday, Aug. 7, from 5 to 7 p.m. for a reception for Andrea Peter’s new show ”35 Years of Color.” We expect Andrea to be in attendance.
