Old Head Tide Church in Alna to open
The Old Head Tide Church will be open to visitors during July and August on Saturdays and Sundays from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The Friends of Head Tide Church warmly welcome everyone to stop by and explore this historic landmark.
Visitors can view the completion of two recent restoration projects: the church spire, completed in 2024, and newly installed plinths on the front façade.
Please note that there will be no regular visiting hours on Saturday, July 11. Instead, the church will host a concert by the Wilson Jazz Duo at 3 p.m. Visitors are invited to experience the historic church while enjoying an afternoon of live jazz in this unique setting.
The Head Tide Church was dedicated on Nov. 21, 1838. During the early nineteenth century, Head Tide was a thriving village within the Town of Alna, supported by mills at the dam, agriculture, boatbuilding, fishing and forestry.
By the 1940s, the church had fallen into disrepair. In 1955, a dedicated group of local citizens formed the Friends of Old Head Tide Church to address years of neglect. They secured title to the building and assumed responsibility for its restoration and ongoing care.
Since 1955, the Committee's mission has been to restore and maintain the church while preserving and enriching its connection to the historic village of Head Tide and Midcoast Maine. Today, the church continues to serve the community as a venue for weddings, concerts, performances and other community events.
The Head Tide Church is at 29 Head Tide Church Road (off Head Tide Road, connecting Routes 218 and 194) in Alna. For more information, visit the Friends of Old Head Tide Church Facebook page or email HeadTideChurch@gmail.com
