Save our town, vote no April 17

    Dear Editor:

Trending across America, cities and towns are removing parking and making them more walkable and pedestrian friendly. And when this is proposed, there is usually opposition from merchants because of the fear of losing business and customers.

However, what actually matters, as studies have shown and what has been proven, is the number of available parking spaces that are within a reasonable walking distance from a destination.

The MDOT project, Option 2, makes sense both from a safety standpoint as well as visual appeal. How great would it be to have improved parking lots, widened sidewalks and safer pedestrian crossings. Instead of just a town to get through, people will stop and enjoy Wiscasset.

As a Main Street shop owner and resident, I was very excited to see the proposed project and firmly believe it will attract more people who will spend some time walking around enjoying the sites and visiting the shops. We have so much potential here. Let’s accept this gift and move forward.

Vote no on April 17 to stop the lawsuit and save our town.
