Dear Editor:

Senator Collins’s latest Tuesday Report came in this week full of smiling pictures and a list of local groups she had recently met with—two native American tribes, bankers, college students, public housing directors, and Hospitality Maine among them. She mentioned introducing bills to save seniors from scams and pay honor to fallen firefighters. 

Not mentioned was that she voted “yes” on the Save act — which will likely disenfranchise thousands here— in spite of two thirds of Maine voters having expressed opposition to the bill. Neither was there any response to the chaotic violence issuing from the White House, no comment on the unchecked excesses of the I.C.E. marauders, or to Trump’s demanding aid against Iran from Mideastern neighbors and, in the next breath, saying we’re so strong we don’t need help from anyone and that he’s winning the war and ready to take Cuba.

I’m thinking that Susan Collins might be a fine state senator. I wish she would run for that office, leaving her post in the US government to someone who takes a rational position on national and world affairs, someone who will object to the shredding of our democratic institutions and stand up to lunatic tyranny while it’s still possible.
