Seth Glier: Songwriting as a tool for positive change
Singer-songwriter Seth Glier will be playing the Opera House at Boothbay Harbor on Wednesday, July 22 at 7:30 p.m. He will be accompanied by fiddle player, and long-time friend, Kelly Halloran.
Glier, a Grammy-nominated artist from Western Massachusetts, says, “I think music is just, it's one of the great magic tricks of life when it comes to building whatever you need, whether it's a bridge or whether it's community, whether it's support or just a container for pain for all kinds of things.”
Recently, he has turned his musical gaze to the natural world, channeling nature’s longing for communion with humanity into song. His new album "Everything" is a collection of eight songs inviting listeners to imagine a future in which humans and the planet are re-aligned into mutual restoration. Each song presents a practical climate solution with concrete optimism.
The album’s title track was inspired by an experience Glier had while foraging. “When I picked up the chanterelle mushroom and brought it towards my nose," he says, “I first smelled sweet apricot and then my spine straightened suddenly. The feeling was like déjà vu. It was a ‘first time,’ yet somewhere inside of me I had done this once before. I was reconnecting to a knowledge I had already known.”
Glier is thrilled to be returning to Maine: “I get to come to beautiful places like Boothbay Harbor and play the Opera House. I've been playing there since I was 19 or 20 years old.” His first show here was with Livingston Taylor. “Livingston was a mentor of mine at Berklee College of Music. When I dropped out, he kind of took me out on the road, and the mentorship kind of continued. I learned a lot about stagecraft from him, everything from, like, how do you treat people when you walk into the venue to what is your sort of collegialness?” Concert veterans of his shows will attest to the fact that he has translated those lessons into his own style of welcoming and intimate shows.
Glier has shared the bill with a diverse list of artists ranging from the likes of Ronnie Spector, James Taylor, Ani DiFranco, to Glen Campbell. As a producer, music director, or studio musician he has collaborated with Sophie B. Hawkins, Tom Rush, Antje Duvekot, Richard Shindell, Doctora Qingona, Dar Williams, Nick Carter, and Cyndi Lauper. Seth Glier is a five-time Independent Music Award winner and received a Grammy nomination for his album "The Next Right Thing."
Most recently, Kelly Halloran has been touring with Foreigner. Last fall she finished a North American tour with Noah Cyrus, playing violin, acoustic guitar, and singing background vocals. She also performed with the Goo Goo Dolls at Stagecoach 2025 along with cellist Dave Eggar, and Nikki Lane.
