Skiing and shooting in the frosty air
A year ago, the directors of Hidden Valley Nature Center had to truck in snow for the annual Liberal Cup Biathlon in Jefferson.
A few weeks earlier, the event, which is entering its fourth year, was postponed due to a lack of snow.
But on Sunday, Feb. 8, snow wasn’t a problem.
The biathlon went on as planned as flurries blew across the loop and on top of the several feet of snow that lined the course. More than 150 people took to the course, which featured more of an uphill lean from last year’s, due to the extra snow.
The temperatures never made it past freezing, in fact, there were some hot times on the course this year.
Regan Sweeney was first in the novice division, when he finished the course in 20 minutes and 55 seconds. Ania Wright (23:48.9) was the fastest female in the novice group.
In the intermediate group, William Hinkley was first overall and fastest male skier when he finished in 19:12.3 and Megan Shore was the fastest woman in the group when she finished in 25:19.8.
In the skate ski division, Saphrona Stetson (33:07.4) was first in the women’s race and David Dlint (19:23.1) was first in the men’s race.
In the advanced group it was Marley O’Neill who finished first in the men’s race and overall, when he completed the course in 25:41.7, and Audrey Laurita was first in the women’s race when she skied across the finish line in 29:08.1.
