SVRSU to decide budget by ballot July 14

Alna, Westport Island and the rest of Sheepscot Valley Regional School Unit 12 will vote July 14 on the district’s proposed $24 million budget. Live on the district’s YouTube channel June 10, the board set the vote for state primary day.

Superintendent of Schools Howard Tuttle expressed hope the budget will pass, and concern the state could curtail funding. He said more might be known in October or November. “I think it’s a wait and see. We’re all pretty nervous.” As a district that is over half state-funded, a curtailment would have a substantial impact, Tuttle said. “And RSU 12 does not have much of a fund balance to plug that hole.

“So I know I’m anticipating a tough year ahead.” He said he will fill no “brand new” jobs without the board’s OK, and he is “not inclined” to do it until more is known.

According to the meeting, it was the last expected one for Alna’s Abby Monahan and Westport Island’s Susan Stires as members. Tuttle thanked them and said he wished they could have had a dinner party for them.
