Terry M. Hathaway
Sadly, we announce the passing of Terry Melinda (Lowden) Hathaway, who peacefully left us March 24, 2026, from a long illness.
Terry was born in Union, New York, on April 27, 1949, grew up in East Boothbay, Maine and eventually resided in Gardiner, Maine.
Terry is predeceased by her adoptive parents, George M. Lowden and Naomi (Whitmire) Lowden and her husband, Paul A. Hathaway.
She is survived by her stepdaughters, Jane Tower and Ginger Shugrue, five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Terry graduated from Boothbay Region High School and then with a bachelor’s degree in business from the University of Maine at Machias.
In her early years, she worked at The Smiling Cow, Boothbay Harbor, Maine and after college she made a 42-year career with the state of Maine, working through a few positions and departments with most of it with the Department of Labor, as an administrative assistant.
She was formerly in a bowling league, a lifetime member of The Maine Morgan Horse Club, The Maine Quarter Horse Association and The Maine Horse Association. Terry was introduced to the horse world by her husband and enjoyed meeting so many friends through it. Not many know this, but she was afraid of riding. However, one day, thanks to very close friends, she got the courage to surprise Paul by riding one. It was a proud moment.
In her down time, she would knit/crochet, read, do crosswords, Sudoku, put puzzles together, write letters or cards, take scenic rides, attend horse shows, play with her cats, go out to eat and/or shopping, craft fairs, enjoyed family and friend gatherings, loved the spirit of the holidays and always added to the festivities by wearing a costume or something festive. She got a good laugh when giving us presents because she wrapped them in a box with a lot of tape, making it hard to open.
She was extremely smart, spunky, fun, witty, a little fashionista, patient, and so very thoughtful.
If you were a part of Terry’s life, you knew she loved you and cared for you deeply. Until we meet again, Terry will be greatly missed and live in our hearts forever.
A celebration of life will be planned for sometime in May and will be announced through her Facebook page at Terry M. Hathaway.
