Another place to go
We were sorry to read Woolwich's Memorial Day service will not be held this year. As Phil Di Vece reported, this is due to lack of interest, with fewer and fewer attendees in recent years. Held at alternating churches, the observance has always appeared well-organized, like last year's with an invocation and benediction, welcoming address and a keynote speaker. And as the person usually covering American Legion Post 54 services in Wiscasset, just as meaningful but usually cold and/or windy, I have always thought how nice it was Woolwich did its indoors.
So, put on a coat and maybe a couple other layers this Memorial Day, Woolwich residents, and pledge and pray and honor alongside area residents in Wiscasset. American Legion Post 54 does a 9 a.m. service at the veterans wall at the town office, corner of routes One and 27.
Post 54 is a dedicated, community-oriented group, and not among Wiscasset's youngest; and while it appears the Wiscasset services have been drawing more attendees than Woolwich's, there is plenty of room on the lawn for more attendees.
Legion members also do a gun salute. Loud, but again, full of meaning.
And psst, at the end of the service, they invite everyone to the Legion hall on southbound Route One (conveniently, on your way home to Woolwich!) for doughnuts.
Week's somber parting thought: The number of U.S. servicepeople who've made the ultimate sacrifice has grown again recently. This Memorial Day will honor them all.
