Virginia C. MacLeod

Virginia Carlisle MacLeod, 100, of Carrollton, Georgia and Boothbay, Maine, formerly of Stuart, Florida and Princeton, New Jersey, died peacefully Dec. 19, 2016.

Virginia was born in Boothbay Harbor on Jan. 20, 1916, the oldest daughter of the late Captain Louis A. and Mary Alice Wylie Carlisle.

Virginia attended Boothbay Harbor High School, graduated from Oak Grove School in Vassalboro, and Beaver College in Pennsylvania.Virginia married the late Ronald F. MacLeod on July 29, 1939 in Boothbay Harbor and they made their home in a variety of places as her husband pursued a teaching career in independent schools. Virginia taught history at the DeVeaux School in Niagara Falls, New York and taught in the academic learning skills program at The Hun School in Princeton, New Jersey where her husband was assistant headmaster. Virginia and her husband retired to Stuart, Florida in 1977 where she lived until moving to Georgia in 2008.

Virginia was very proud of and always looked forward to seeing her extended family. She spent her winters in Florida and Georgia and looked forward to returning to Boothbay each summer and spending time at the family’s summer home there on Knickerbocker Lake.

Virginia was a wonderful hostess and enjoyed entertaining family and friends in Stuart and in Boothbay. She baked delicious pies and cookies for her grandchildren and she always looked forward to dessert. Virginia was athletic and enjoyed golfing and swimming with her husband in Florida and Maine. She was also a wonderful dancer and enjoyed dancing at weddings, at the Elks Club in Stuart, and at restaurants in Boothbay Harbor well into her nineties. Virginia was a storyteller and she loved to share stories of her childhood in Boothbay Harbor. In addition, Virginia enjoyed reading historical biographies and continued to read even at the age of 100.

Virginia is survived by her three children: Ronald MacLeod and his wife Karen of Woodbridge, Virginia; Mary Alice Brown and her husband Dennis of Villa Rica, Georgia; and James C. MacLeod and his wife Carolyn of Kent, Connecticut; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a niece, Jill Garcelon Cummings; a nephew, David Rand; and a sister-in-law, Nancy MacLeod. In addition to her husband, Virginia was predeceased by her sister Lucy Carlisle Garcelon.

The family would like to thank Virginia’s granddaughter, Debra Brown Haisley, who was Virginia’s loving companion and caregiver for the past three and a half years.

J. Collins Funeral Home in Villa Rica, Georgia is in charge of arrangements. A celebration of life and burial at the Kenniston Cemetery in Boothbay under the direction of Staples Funeral Home of Gardiner, Maine, will be held in the summer of 2017 at the convenience of the family.
