This week at the Harbor Theater
"The Uprising" - (R; 2 hours, 8 minutes) - Based on the true story of the uprising that inspired the legend of Robin Hood, Andrew Garfield stars as the leader of a rebellion against the tyranny of King Richard II in a fight for justice. In 1831 plague sweeps across Europe, killing half the population of England. As King Richard II and the oligarchs impose a brutal tax on the poorest members of society, a farmer's simmering discontent erupts into full-blown anger. Within days, he leads a ferocious rebellion as thousands of commoners march on London in the name of justice and freedom. Final shows: Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 2 p.m. (OCAP) and Thursday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m.
“The Uprising alternates from thrilling to heartbreaking throughout and serves as another reminder that history is built on chapters like this, when power devolves into cruelty and tests the resiliency of the populace.” – Randy Myers, San Jose Mercury News
"Primetime" - (R; 1 hour, 50 minutes) - In 2006, television journalist Chris Hansen sets out to make television history with "To Catch a Predator," the enormously popular series that turned hidden-camera sting operations into must-see TV. Robert Pattinson stars as Hansen in Primetime, a provocative new crime thriller inspired by the real-life phenomenon and the complicated legacy it left behind. As ratings climb and the operation grows increasingly ambitious, the film turns its attention to the people behind the cameras—and the increasingly blurred lines between journalism and entertainment, justice and spectacle. Directed by Lance Oppenheim the film also stars Merritt Wever, Skyler Gisondo, Phoebe Bridgers, Matthew Maher, and Bokeem Woodbine. "Primetime" is a darkly compelling look at an era of television that captivated millions while raising questions that feel even more relevant in today’s true-crime-obsessed culture. Opening Friday, Oct. 9, 7 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 10, 7 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 11, 2 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2 p.m. (OCAP), Thursday, Oct. 15, 7 p.m.
“This hallicinatory hellscape puts a scarily brilliant Robert Pattinson in the Oscar race as a TV host who chases predators for ratings and goes mad in the process.” – Peter Travers, The Travers Take
"Four Rational People" - (NR; 1 hour, 53 minutes) - After nearly 50 years, nine GRAMMY Awards, and thousands of concerts, the acclaimed Emerson String Quartet prepares to play its final notes. "Four Rational People" follows the legendary ensemble through its farewell season, weaving together memories from an extraordinary career with intimate glimpses of life on the road as longtime friends and collaborators confront the difficult decision to walk away from the music they love—and from one another. Both a celebration of an extraordinary musical legacy and a poignant reflection on friendship, aging, and knowing when it is time to pass the torch, the documentary culminates in one final Emerson String Quartet performance and the bittersweet reality of what comes after the curtain falls. Part of Harbor Theater’s Arts on Film Series. One show only: Friday, Oct. 16 at 2 p.m.
“The legacy of the Emerson String Quartet includes dozens of recordings, and it’s probably in those that the deepest lessons lie. For anyone curious to meet the musicians who made them, ‘Four Rational People’ is a decent introduction.” – Zachary Barnes, Wall Street Journal
