As we move into September, movies return and we gallop towards resuming many of our favorite series, including broadcasts from the Metropolitan Opera whose tickets go on sale in the upcoming week. Subscriptions to our Classic Film Club Series 4 – this time celebrating the films of director Billy Wilder – are also going on sale. Visit our website for complete details.

“Ailey” - (PG-13; 1 hour, 22 minutes) - Alvin Ailey was a trailblazing pioneer who found salvation through dance. Ailey traces the full contours of this brilliant and enigmatic man whose search for the truth in movement resulted in enduring choreography that centers on the Black American experience with grace, strength, and unparalleled beauty. Told through Ailey’s own words and featuring evocative archival footage and interviews with those who intimately knew him, director Jamila Wignot weaves together a resonant biography of an elusive visionary. Final screenings at 2 and 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1 and Thu rsday, Sept. 2.

“Stillwater” - (R; 2 hours, 19 minutes) - Unemployed roughneck Bill Baker (Matt Damon) travels from Oklahoma to Marseille to visit his estranged daughter Allison (Abigail Breslin). Imprisoned for a murder she claims she did not commit. Allison seizes on a new tip that could exonerate her and presses Bill to engage her legal team but Bill eager to prove his worth and regain his daughter’s trust, takes matters into his own hands - quickly stymied by language barriers, cultural differences, and a complicated legal system.
