WES Read-a-thon kicks off
First graders at Wiscasset Elementary School celebrated Dr. Seuss's birthday and kicked off the school's Read-a-Thon on Monday, March 2. Students wore Dr. Seuss hats and had whiskers drawn on their faces for the occasion. Longtime volunteer Tracey Campbell visited to read several stories to the class. First grade teachers Trae Stover and Marcie Abbott dressed up for the occasion as well, celebrating right along with their students.
This year's Read-a-Thon is sponsored by PIE and runs through March 23. Money raised will go toward playground upgrades at Wiscasset Elementary. PIE has plans for both near-term improvements and larger projects, with an overall goal of raising $50,000 over the next three years. A fundraising thermometer in the school lobby will track progress throughout the campaign.
The Read-a-Thon has two goals this year — $15,000 raised and 15,000 minutes read. Meeting both will earn the school a community-wide celebration, and the classroom that raises the most money will receive its own reward. Students learned at this week's school assembly that reading just five minutes a day through March 23 is all it takes to hit the reading goal.
PIE is also forming a playground sub-committee for those interested in being part of the planning process. Reach out via email (wiscassetpiechair@gmail.com) to get involved.
