letter to the editor

What Democrats hate

    Dear Editor:

I admit last month’s letter to the editor entitled “Who is the party of hate?” stung a bit. Having witnessed public outbursts by the person who berated the author, I sympathized and understood her desire to speak out. However, I’m a Democrat and though I don’t shy away from a lively debate, I try to argue the facts without resorting to insults.

But I’ve given that letter more thought and maybe she’s right, maybe Democrats are the party of hate. Dems hate having a president who thinks nothing of publicly mocking the disabled. Dems hate the intentional cruelty of separating innocent children from their mothers. Dems hate a government so anti-immigrant it deports those who have honorably served in our military. Dems hate having a president accept the word of an adversary over that of U.S. intelligence officers. Dems hate when the commander-in-chief won’t confront that same foreign adversary over bounties on our military. Dems hate that the president thinks our servicemen and women are “losers” and “suckers.” Dems hate that our democracy is threatened by a president who welcomes foreign interference in our elections. Dems hate the constant attacks on our free press. Dems hate to see Americans dying needlessly because of the incompetence and malfeasance of the man sitting behind the resolute desk. Dems hate the rule of law being trampled by a partisan attorney general. Dems hate when a president pardons a war criminal and celebrates a murderous vigilante. Dems hate the president sabotaging our postal service in an attempt to undermine the election. Dems hate that the president and his apologists openly embrace dangerous conspiracy theories. Dems hate that the current occupant of the White House models the worst of our nature for America’s children rather than the best. Dems hate having a president who says “I take no responsibility at all” for the failures of his administration.

And though we hate all these things, most of us try to continue to love our family, friends and neighbors including those who support the very man who has brought such division and chaos to our nation.
