Wiscasset marijuana rules supporters lead in early survey results

Most people who have so far answered Wiscasset’s marijuana survey want an ordinance to allow licenses, Selectmen’s Chair Sarah Whitfield told the ordinance review committee Monday night. That survey and one with questions to help guide the next comprehensive plan are open until Jan. 15. The town office has copies.

Whitfield chairs the comp plan committee and is the board’s liaison to the ORC. In Monday’s Zoom meeting, she said she has started two piles of completed marijuana surveys: One opposed to the town allowing any marijuana licenses numbered 109 so far; the yes pile, 139. “I would say the majority (of yeses) checked off yes for everything, with some exceptions.”

It sounds like the ORC will be working on an ordinance, ORC Chair Karl Olson said.

Having close to 250 responses so far is great, Whitfield said. She will have detailed results for the committee to review ahead of its next meeting Jan. 24, including which licenses respondents supported.

Whitfield added, the comp plan survey, which is longer, has had 196 responses. “That’s good, not as good as for marijuana, but good,” Olson said.

Also Monday, the ORC further honed drafts of the code of ethics and the town property use policy selectmen sought. The committee proposes selectmen decide the users’ fees and can waive them.
