Wiscasset’s voter turnout tops 78%
Wiscasset’s voter turnout of 2,155, Election Day and early voting combined, was huge, Town Clerk Rebecca Brewer said.
In an interview Nov. 5, Brewer said Wiscasset has 2,755 “active registered” voters, including 175 who registered in the last two and a half weeks. “And they were all ages, across the board,” she said of those recent registrations. “A lot of young people, a lot of middle-aged, and even some older people that have moved to the area.”
It was really nice seeing so many young people register to vote, Brewer said. “To see them get involved, it’s a good thing.”
Among the 2,155 people who voted, 796 did it early. “That’s very unusually high,” Brewer said.
Over 900 absentee ballots were handed out, so to get back 796 was “a huge return rate,” Brewer said. “There's not many (ballots) that did not get back to us.”
And everything went well at the polls, Brewer said. “There were no hiccups, no lines that were out the door for hours on end. It went very well,” and the additional tabulator machine is a definite help, she said.
Brewer said Wiscasset’s 2,755 active registered voters consist of 830 Democrats, 870 Republicans, 934 unenrolled, 13 Libertarians, and 108 Green Independents.
