Clubs/Organizations:
Considering the office you are running for, what do you feel are the three most pressing issues (350 words or less): My name is Douglas Merrill. I have run my construction company for over 40 years and pride myself on quality and honesty in everything I do. I have lived in Wiscasset for over of 35 years. I have spent many years coaching youth sports in basketball, soccer and baseball. Wiscasset is not alone in its issues with our education system. The entire country is failing our students due to the current educational model. It is time to think outside the box to seek the changes that will allow us to move forward with better results.
While serving on the Future of the Schools Committee I have come to realize that these changes will require the input of school administrators, teachers, parents and students. It will take a great deal of time and effort. Transparency from the school committee and participation of the public can lead our school system to a stronger sense of community and better learning results. It is imperative that everyone stay involved and that all ideas are heard, respected and considered.
The responsibility of a school committee is to give our students the best education possible, keeping in mind our fiduciary responsibility to the taxpayers. In all of this, we must be guided by common sense. I believe that together, we can make a difference for the better.
I believe, that together, we can return our school system the envy of other school systems. Let us be the topic of conversations in a positive manner, by becoming a role model on how to educate our students. I invite and encourage your participation so that we can realize positive, meaningful progress for our students and our community. Thank you for your support.
