Wiscasset school committee candidate Laura Mewa
Address: Wiscasset
Occupation: Assistant Principal
Education: Ed. S in educational leadership, M. Ed in counselor education, B.A. in women’s studies
Political History (Board, Committees, other): In high school, I had the privilege of campaigning for Senator Susan Collins and learning about the campaign process. I traveled around the state with the Senator to her debates. Clubs/Organizations: When I lived in Waldoboro, I served on the Planning Board and really enjoyed reviewing and learning about the process of policy making. I served a year on the Ordinance Review Committee for Wiscasset and am currently a directress for the Wiscasset Female Charitable Society.
Considering the office you are running for, what do you feel are the three most pressing issues (350 words or less): Wiscasset is a beautiful and safe community that we are privileged to call home. However, I recognize that our residents already shoulder a significant tax burden, and it’s important to be thoughtful and responsible when it comes to school budgeting. If elected, I would advocate for a careful review of enrollment trends, per-pupil spending, administrative costs, and student performance on state and national assessments. Having worked in education for over 15 years, I understand that assessments are just one measure, but they provide valuable insight into how our students are performing compared to surrounding districts and across Maine.
Another critical issue is curriculum development. As a former Wiscasset School Department employee, I witnessed firsthand the lack of professional development opportunities for staff and the need for greater oversight and consistency in curriculum implementation. A strong, well-supported curriculum ensures all students receive a high-quality education, and our teachers deserve the tools and training necessary to make that happen.
Finally, rebuilding the relationship between the schools and the broader Wiscasset community is essential. Schools thrive when they are deeply connected to the families and citizens they serve. I believe we must foster transparency, communication, and trust to ensure that the community feels valued and involved in the success of our schools.
Any other thoughts on why you are running or what you can bring to the office? (150 words or less): I am running for the Wiscasset School Board because I have seen firsthand both the challenges our schools are facing and the many good things happening within them. I know many of our teachers personally and can attest to their deep dedication not only to their students but also to the school community as a whole. Wiscasset’s schools have endured years of inconsistent leadership and high teacher turnover. Strong schools start with strong leadership and staff who feel supported and valued. At the same time, I believe in balancing that support with fiscal responsibility. We must be thoughtful with our resources, ensuring that our staffing and programming meet the needs of students while respecting the taxpayers who make our schools possible. If elected, I will bring a commitment to asking "why," to seeking clarity before making decisions, and to being a steady, informed advocate for students, teachers, and the broader Wiscasset community.
