Duck boat, train, canoes and more: Wiscasset students traveling
Wiscasset's school committee May 20 approved senior and other trips that were set to have students in cabins, a duck boat, canoes, an amusement park and more.
Wiscasset Middle High School Principal Sarah Hubert apologized to the committee for not asking permission sooner. According to the discussion and a 2024 policy at wiscassetschools.org, trips beyond a 100-mile radius of Wiscasset need the committee's advance approval.
Hubert said seniors were heading to Massachusetts May 22, first to Prospect Mountain Campground, where they would stay overnight in cabins; the next day was onto Six Flags and then arriving back in Wiscasset that night.
The one-day, eighth grade trip is June 2 to Boston, by train from Brunswick to North Station. The class will visit Quincy Market, the Holocaust Memorial, Paul Revere House and New England Aquarium, where they will see an IMAX movie; a duck boat tour is also planned.
The third trip is an outing club one to Shirley Mills, south of Greenville, for two nights of camping, Hubert said. The second day will include a drive north to canoe on a pond and try to spot moose, then a possible drive to Jackman to take in a softball game. The trip runs from May 30 to June 1.
Hubert also mentioned several planned trips that did not need approval, including hiking in Camden Hills State Park and kayaking on the Sheepscot River.
"Yeah, this is way cooler than the stuff we did when I was in school," committee member Victoria Hugo-Vidal commented at one point.
The trips that needed approval were the only items taken up in the special meeting in WMHS's library.
