A wonderful community: Thank you
Dear Editor:
Yesterday marked my final day as CEO of the Boothbay Region YMCA. Today, rather than saying good-bye, I simply want to say thank you!
Over the years, many people have been kind enough to thank me for my service. The truth is that the Boothbay Region YMCA has never been about one person. It has always been about a community of people who believe in one another and who choose, every day, to make this place stronger.
Thank you to our members, volunteers, donors, partners, staff, and friends. Thank you to the families who entrusted us with their children, the seniors who found friendship and connection, the volunteers who gave their time, the donors who invested in our future, and the countless community partners who worked alongside us to meet local needs.
As I reflect on the past 24 years, I am reminded of one of my favorite movies, “It's a Wonderful Life.” George Bailey comes to understand that a life is measured not by wealth or accomplishments, but by the people whose lives we touch and the community we help build together.
That lesson feels especially true here.
The Boothbay Region YMCA is not a building. It is not a program. It is not the CEO. It is a living reflection of this community's generosity, compassion, and belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.
Together, we have created something truly special. We have helped children discover their potential, ensured that families could access programs regardless of their ability to pay, supported neighbors in times of need, and built connections that strengthen our community.
The YMCA's story will continue because of you. Its future is bright because of you.
Thank you for allowing me to be a small part of this wonderful story. My heart is full of gratitude, and I leave knowing that the Boothbay Region YMCA remains in caring hands and will continue changing lives for generations to come.
As Clarence said, "No man is a failure who has friends." By that measure, our YMCA and I have been blessed beyond measure.
With heartfelt appreciation,
Andy Hamblett
