The Boothbay Region Y Arts summer theater group presented two delightful shows of Disney’s musical “Moana JR.” on Saturday, July 31 in the Y’s gymnasium. The cast of 32 elementary school age youngsters put on a fun show, which had good attendance at both the 2 and 5 p.m. performances.

According to Music Theatre International’s website, “Disney’s ‘Moana JR.’ is a 60-minute musical adaptation of the 2016 Disney animated film, bringing the adventures of Moana and her village of Motunui to life onstage. ‘Moana JR.’ features all the beloved songs from the film, written by Tony®, GRAMMY, Emmy, and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foa’i, and Mark Mancina, including ‘How Far I’ll Go,’ ‘Shiny’ and ‘You’re Welcome.’

“This thrilling and heartwarming coming-of-age story follows the strong-willed Moana as she sets sail across the Pacific to save her village and discover the truth about her heritage. Moana and the legendary demigod Maui embark on an epic journey of self-discovery and camaraderie as both learn to harness the power that lies within. With empowering messages of bravery and selflessness, ‘Moana JR.’ is sure to bring out the hero within each of us.”

Veteran Y Arts actors Jojo Shea and Trey Tibbetts were outstanding at Moana and Maui, respectively. Playing the Ancestors and narrating the story were other veteran Y Arts actors, Emma Castonia, Sarah Harris and Spencer Pottle. Hamilton Pierpan and Sofia Michaud played Moana’s parents; Phoebe Cooks played Moana’s grandmother; Finn Sullivan and Franz Finn played Moana’s young friends; and another veteran Y Arts actor, Sophia Mansfield, played the giant crab Tomatoa, with Fiona Bishop and Scout Martin playing Tomatoa’s claws.

Other actors included Imaj Armstead, Gigi Blake, Maya Rhys Jacobs, Alana LaCourse, Ezra Chancu, Anderson Pierpan, Michael VanHook and, serving as Villagers, Nick Colby, Samantha Colby, Olivia Elwell, Cosomina Finn, Madeline Frey, Skyler Hyson, Lydia Mitchell, Charlotte Ramsdell, Corinne Rogers, Ireland Teele, Lila Lehouillier and Kayla Watts.

The show was directed and choreographed by Emily Mirabile with help from Emerson Harris and Phoebe Cook.
