Sandra Barnes Gillespie died with family by her side on Nov. 3, 2019 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center after a short illness.

Born April 2, 1939 in Chicago, Illinois to Clarice (Hamill) and Nelson L. Barnes, she was raised in Lake Forest, Illinois and attended Bradford College. She relocated recently to the Upper Valley after living nearly 20 years in Boothbay Harbor, Maine and before that in Hanover, New Hampshire and Scarsdale, New York.

Sandy was predeceased by her husband, John Lodge Gillespie, and brother, Nelson “Chip” Barnes.

Sandy found great joy in her spectacular gardens, cooking, everything Christmas and her family. She was a past president of the Hanover Garden Club, member of the Boothbay Harbor Garden Club and avid volunteer at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay. 

She is survived by her children, Laura Gillespie of Lebanon, New Hampshire and Lodge Gillespie of Bethesda, Maryland; her three grandsons, Ethan Demarest and Jack and Lucas Gillespie; niece, Jennifer Barnes; and daughter-in-law, Anne Rubin. There will be a private service for the family at a later date.
