“Mrs. Harris Goes To Paris” – (PG; 1 hour, 56 minutes) – The film based on the novel by Paul Gallico that appears to have stepped right out of another era. A longtime widow and housekeeper, Mrs. Harris finds her life desperately dull. One day, spying a Christian Dior dress in the closet of a woman she works for, she becomes obsessed with the idea of flying to Paris to buy herself a dress just like that...believing it will turn her life around. She gets up the nerve to spend every penny she has on a plane ticket, and sets off for Paris...determined to make her dream come true! There are many, many obstacles along the way but our Mrs. Harris faces them all with spunk and optimism, warming the hearts of even the snobbiest French fashionistas. Leslie Manville is a delight as Ada Harris. If you’re ready for a little frothy fun, this movie is just the ticket! Final screenings at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17 and Thursday, Aug. 18.

“Brian and Charles” – (PG; 1 hour, 30 minutes) - An endearing outlier, Brian lives alone in a Welsh valley, inventing oddball contraptions that seldom work. After finding a discarded mannequin head, Brian gets an idea. Three days, a washing machine, and sundry spare parts later, he’s invented Charles, an artificially intelligent robot who learns English from a dictionary and proves a charming, cheeky companion. Before long, however, Charles also develops autonomy. Intrigued by the wider world — or whatever lies beyond the cottage where Brian has hidden him away — Charles craves adventure. At 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19; Saturday, Aug. 20; Monday, Aug. 22; Tuesday, August 23, 7 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 24; Thursday, Aug. 25 and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21.

“Made with genuine affection and innately British whimsy, this is really just an odd-couple comedy about two lonely blokes — one of whom has a ‘washing machine for a tummy’.” – Empire Magazine

“Chinatown” – a Harbor Theater Special Event – (1974; 2 hours, 11 minutes) - Sunday, Aug. 21, 5 p.m. Wine and cheese served in lobby from 4:30 p.m. Special guest Ken Eisen, co-founder of Maine International Film Festival (MIFF) and Railroad Square Cinema in Waterville, will introduce the film and stay after for Q & A. Eisen is also the booking agent and longtime advisor of Harbor Theater. He is primarily responsible for developing our programming over the last five years. Come and have a glass of wine and meet him in the lobby before the show.

The screenplay, which received 11 nominations for Oscars and won the award for Best Screenplay, centers on Los Angeles private eye J.J. "Jake" Gittes (Jack Nicholson) who is hired by Evelyn Mulwray to investigate her husband in a routine infidelity case. Jake's investigation soon becomes anything but routine when he meets the real Mrs. Mulwray (Faye Dunaway) and realizes he was hired by an imposter. Mr. Mulwray's sudden death sets Gittes on a tangled trail of corruption, deceit and sinister family secrets as Evelyn's father (John Huston) becomes a suspect in the case.

Said Ken Eisen in the MIFF catalogue: “Filled with iconic lines and scenes and a truly killer finale, ‘Chinatown’ looked great in its 1974 day ... and looks even more iconic and just plain terrific now.”

Coming soon: “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On” -  Aug. 26.
