A head-on, two-vehicle crash on Route 1 in Wiscasset near Naked Leather sent both drivers to area hospitals January 14.

Wiscasset Police Chief Troy Cline said in a press release that, according to a witness, a white, 1997 Chrysler Town and Country Van was southbound when it swerved into the northbound lane, barely missing the witness’ vehicle before colliding head-on with a northbound, green 2007 Volvo SW.

Norman Blycher, 81, of Topsham and Southport was named as the van’s driver; Ryan Fendler, 87, of Camden was identified as the Volvo’s driver.

“Both drivers were transported by ambulance to area hospitals. The extent of their injuries is unknown at this time,” the release states.

Route 1 was briefly closed while emergency workers assessed the patients and removed the vehicles involved, according to the release.

The crash was reported at about 4 p.m. Tuesday. Wiscasset police, fire and ambulance personnel went to the scene, the release states.
