Three Westport Island property owners had their requests for tax abatements granted when the board of selectmen met Monday evening.

The estate of late island resident David Fairfield was represented by executor Patricia Asbury in a request for a property tax abatement. Property belonging to the estate had been assessed on the basis of greater acreage than Fairfield actually owned. As a result, the board approved an abatement of $48.07 for one year.

Island resident Channing P. Jones also requested a property tax abatement based on incorrect acreage. The value of the property was originally assessed based on 240 feet of shore front, however the actual shore front is only 180 feet.  As a result, the board approved the requested abatement for the current year.

A third property tax abatement was approved for island resident Eben Greenleaf. The abatement was granted for $57.16 for the previous three years of property taxes. The request was made due to errors in the original assessment.

Other business

The board of selectmen also unanimously approved the use of Westport Island’s Town Hall at no charge for a benefit supper to be held either Nov. 8 or Nov. 15.

Nita Greenleaf mad the request. The supper will benefit Mona Greenleaf, whose husband Neil, died Oct. 9.

The date and time for the benefit supper will be determined in the near future.

Westport resident Judy Reeves spoke at the meeting to thank the selectmen for the work that they do to take care of the island throughout the year. Reeves and her husband Chuck are moving to Texas in the near future and wanted to express her appreciation.
