Second salt shed collapses in as many weeks
The winter of 2015 giveth (snow), and it taketh (salt sheds).
The Damariscotta salt shed recently collapsed under the weight of snow, but the damage done to the Quonset hut-style shed hasn't set back the town's snow plowing or salting abilities, Seth Hagar, vice president of Hagar Enterprises said in an email.
Hagar said too much snow collected on the canvas roof and folded-in. No one was hurt, no equipment was damaged, and only a little of the material inside was lost when it mixed with the snow, Hagar said.
“There is no reduction in service; we have made a spot in our larger shed to store the salt for the rest of the winter, and overall a very small blip on the proverbial radar screen,” he said.
Damariscotta town manger Matt Lutkus said in an email that the shed, which had plywood sides and a metal frame roof, likely came down at approximately 2 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 22.
The larger shed, which is made of concrete and houses the town’s sand supply, was unaffected by the collapse of the other shed.
Damariscotta's shed is the second to have collapsed in the last few weeks. South Bristol's metal shed collapsed due to snow accumulating on top. No one was hurt when that shed came down, either.
