Westport Island Column: Congratulations and upcoming events
The longer days are lovely, the morning sun comes softly across the water or brightly through the trees, and on weekends, there’s plenty of time to get dirty, go to Montsweag, get home, mow the yard, find tools, welcome friends and fireflies as dusk settles in. Yep, well worth the wait.
Congratulations to Eva Bradford, daughter of David and the late Anne Bradford, who received her doctor of osteopathic medicine degree from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine on Saturday, May 16. Eva grew up on the old Brooks farm, and graduated from Wiscasset High School and the University of Maine. She’ll be heading south soon to fulfill her residency at the Monroe Regional Medical Center in Ocala, Florida. What a fantastic accomplishment. Best wishes from your Westport friends and neighbors!
Calling all crafters: You’ve been busy since the holidays making new creations, getting ready for a busy year of shows and sales. How ‘bout joining the Westport Community Association at the popular meet and greet next Saturday, June 20, at the Town Hall. There are tables available ($10, I think) and Sandra Crehore is organizing this part of the afternoon. Shoot her a quick email at screhore@roadrunner.com to reserve a table.
Hope your car is cleaned out and you’re ready to shop local this Saturday! The Town-Long Yard Sale runs from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and you can pick up “cruising” maps on the right side of Lord Road and at the intersection of North End and Main Roads. Nice day to explore Westport, see old friends, find new toys and books to enjoy, and redecorate your house! To keep your energy up, Nita Greenleaf will be selling snacks at the Fire Station.
The meet and greet on the 20th is shaping up to be a fine kick-off for the Westport Community Association’s summer events. The WCA seems to be all about fun, but it’s really about community — enjoying wine, wonderful cheeses, yummy appetizers, and taking chances on raffle prizes — and trading greetings and stories with new and familiar friends.
The vacation bug is just starting, as schools are finishing up and the days get warmer. What are you taking along for any quiet time, on the plane, relaxing in a garden, or soon on a beach somewhere? Let’s share your “best bets” for good reading — thrillers, biographies, fantasies, politics — please email your suggestions, along with a few words about what you like about the books, to mewbarnes2@yahoo.com.
Lawns spruced up, gardens almost in, the faint (to me) night sound of fireworks, and Nancy’s pottery place opening — Westport continues to unwrap from winter, ready to welcome the summer solstice.
