A husband and wife got safely out of their home that was on fire early Wednesday, March 10, Alna Fire Chief Mike Trask said. Fire, smoke and water heavily damaged the old farmhouse at 1817 Alna Road, Trask said. No one was hurt, he said.

Mark and Pam Fonger were out of the home before firefighters arrived; the husband had apparently smelled smoke, Trask said. Trask said the response to the 2:30 a.m. fire was great, by all departments: Alna, Wiscasset, Edgecomb, Whitefield, Newcastle, Damariscotta and Jefferson fire departments, Lincoln County Strike Team, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and Central Lincoln County (CLC) Ambulance. Firefighters cleared the scene around 9 a.m., he said.

The homeowners have insurance, Trask said. The State Fire Marshal’s Office will determine the fire’s cause; the fire may have started near the chimney, he said.
