Alna selectmen shrink funding request
Alna selectmen have agreed to ask for less than first planned when voters gather for a special town meeting August 25. Monday’s meeting at the Alna Meetinghouse on Route 218 starts at 7 p.m.
The board expected to need $35,000, including $30,000 for the hike in plowing costs under a new contractor. But First Selectman David Abbott said a closer review of the timing of payments showed that $15,000 will be enough to cover the plowing cost hike until the annual town meeting next March. That’s when the rest of the first year’s payments would need funding, along with the contract’s second year which carries a smaller hike, Abbott said on August 18.
“So it isn’t that we’re off the hook, we’re just off the hook for some of it for this fiscal year,” he said.
The board still plans to ask special town meeting voters for $5,000 in case sand and salt costs rise, bringing the total request to $20,000.
