American Legion honors Devin
The American Legion named Rep. Mick Devin, D-Newcastle, one of its Legislators of the Year at its annual state convention on Saturday, June 14.
“Our service members who have fought to protect our freedom deserve our support,” Devin said. “I am honored to be recognized by the American Legion with this award.”
Devin is a retired commander from the U.S. Naval Reserves and is a Blue and Gold Officer in the Admissions Department at the U.S. Naval Academy. The Blue and Gold program helps students navigate the complex application process for the academy and its officers evaluate applicants for admittance to the academy or service as a junior officer in the fleet or Marine Corps.
During the 126th Legislature, Devin co-founded the Veterans Caucus to strengthen the voice of veterans in the lawmaking process. He serves as its co-chairman.
Devin was recognized for his “Inspire to Serve” bill which will enable high school students to learn more about public service sector and military service opportunities. He also worked on measures that ensure marine resources licenses do not expire for service members while they're deployed, guarantees in-state tuition at public colleges and universities in the state for veterans and another measure that would have increased transition housing for veterans.
“There is plenty more that we can do to honor and assist our veterans,” Devin said.
The ceremony was held at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.
Devin is serving his first term in the Maine House and represents Damariscotta, Newcastle, Bristol, South Bristol, Edgecomb and Monhegan Plantation.
