Andre Benoit at Southport Library
The Southport Library is pleased to have the many paintings of Dr. Andre Benoit on display through November and December.
Benoit wrote in his artist statement, “Assembled are plein air paintings that I have produced over the past 20 or more years in various locations mostly in Maine.
“I have been asked if my dark palate is indicative of a depressed persona. My response has been that darkened recesses creates intrigue, mystery, power and uncertainty and captures the viewers' attention …” Benoit wrote.
“All of my paintings exist as they were when I left the field and have not been reworked at a later date elsewhere. I find that when I have left an environment where I have been inspired to paint I leave behind the unique energy and emotion of that day and find that I cannot recapture it in order to reenter the painting at a later date without disturbing its integrity.
“My approach to simplicity has been influenced by painters such as James Fitzgerald and Marston Hartley and my aspiration to capture the essence of an outdoor painting experience, by the Canadian group of 7, George Bellows, Edward Hopper and Rockwell Kent. Enjoy and comment,” Benoit wrote.
