Baked beans help save the spire at St. Philip’s Church
Come and get 'em, folks!
There’s a little something for every palate at St. Philip’s Save-Our-Steeple fundraising dinner on June 7 at 5:30 p.m., 12 Hodge St. in Wiscasset. Telephone, 207-882-7184. Reservations are not necessary, but are welcome to help in the planning. (Monetary donations are also welcome. Make the check out to St. Philip's Church and write Steeple Fund on the memo line.)
Want meatless beans? Got ‘em. Want meaty bacon and hamburg beans? Got ‘em. Want traditional salt pork? Got that, too, according to bean chef, Cathy Tyler. And so many varieties: Jacob’s cattle, great northern, kidney, red, black, white, the list goes on.
Mouth-watering casseroles prepared by the church people will also be available for those who aren’t bean enthusiasts, or who want to compliment their beans with other tasty fare. The menu rounds out with salads, breads, homemade desserts and choice of beverage, all for $8 per adult or $4 per child under 10.
The inability to ring the bell one Sunday morning last fall seemed a bit curious. Upon inspection, it was discovered that something was rotten in the state of the steeple — the bell carriage, the stairs, the ceiling, the copper sheathing. It’s imperative that it be taken care of now before it has to be taken down.
Old, historic structures need lots of attention, and St. Philip’s is no different. With a small congregation, the church is not able to fund the rehabilitation work all on its own, and so is reaching out to the greater community to help keep the spire rising to the heavens and continue its presence in the Wiscasset panorama, so come eat beans and help the cause.
