Blizzard preparations underway
As New Englanders batten down the hatches for what could become one of Maine’s historic storms, local towns are preparing to look out for their people.
Lincoln County Emergency Management Director Todd Hartung is contacting the local EMA directors in the county to insure they have everything they need to support their areas.
The following is a list of towns, and people that can be contacted to assist people that need help during or after the storm. However, in the event of an emergency all towns advise their residents to call 9-1-1.
Wiscasset
Wiscasset Town Manager Laurie Smith encouraged residents to call 9-1-1 or 2-1-1 in the event that the predicted weather turns into an emergency.
Should a need occur for a shelter, the Wiscasset Community center will be open for people. Notices will also be posted on the town website.
Edgecomb
Edgecomb Fire Chief Roy Potter hasn’t made any specific plans yet regarding the forecasted storm. “We’re going to play it by ear right now,” he said.
“Basically, I’m not going to worry yet, because it seems like most of the time there’s supposed to be a big storm, nothing happens,” Potter said.
If road conditions get difficult, Potter may have a couple of firefighters man the station to be able to respond directly to emergencies.
If so, residents whose power is out could stop in for some coffee, but the station is not a shelter, Potter said.
Anyone wishing to do so should call ahead at the station’s non-emergency number, 207-882-9618, to see if it’s open, he said.
Westport Island
Westport Island fire Chief Robert Mooney said the town fire station will open if there is a need for people to come to get warm, and to get water, should there be power outages on the island.
“If someone needs assistance they can call me on my cell phone at 207-460-0367,” he said.
Other numbers residents can call is First Selectman George Richardson, 207-350-0966; and Linda Davis, member of the town’s Human Resources committee, 207-882-5464.
Woolwich
Woolwich residents are welcome to come to the fire station if they need fresh water, to keep warm, or to take a shower, according to Town Administrator Lynette Eastman.
Anyone needing assistance during the storm can call the EMA Director Dick Brigance, at 207-443-6726, or the Fire Chief Jeffery McCarren at 207-577-3959.
Other contacts residents can call include the town selectmen: David King at 207-442-7642; Dale Chadbourne at 442-8489; Allison Hepler at 207-442-0754; Jason Shaw at 207-442-8814; and Lloyd Coombs at 207-443-3570.
Alna
Due to the storm, the Alna Fire Station will not be open unless there is a power outage or express need, according to a town email February 8.
It will be open on a case by case basis, however, for anyone needing water or needing to warm up. Please call Alna’s Emergency Management Agency Director Roger Whitney at 207-586-5803 or Fire Chief Mike Trask at 207-441-0332 if you need access to the station.
The Alna Store will be open its usual Friday hours but will not open on Saturday, Feb. 9.
