Boothbay Region YMCA’s Pedaling for Parkinson’s program

Thu, 02/20/2020 - 8:30am

The YMCA serves as a place for people of all abilities to find a program for them, from Parkinson's disease to high blood pressure.

Our programs are all evidence based, meaning each one has a strict curriculum that the instructors follow to track each participant's progress. Each program is run differently, but all are designed to show you how far you've come on your journey with the Y. Not only can you see physical changes, but these programs are proven to help with social engagement, nutrition, and an overall feeling of being welcome and safe.

The Y’s Pedaling for Parkinson’s program is no exception, it is offered in partnership with LincolnHealth.

Individuals with Parkinson’s disease frequently have continued degrading deficits in kinesthesia. This means that individuals with Parkinson’s disease develop symptoms of shaking, rigidity and difficulty walking. This creates a need for health initiatives that can help to improve motor skills. Research has shown that intense cycling can help to improve the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.

“After riding a few days, Alberts noticed that his biking partner was showing signs of physical improvement, especially in her handwriting, which had become more legible and controlled.” Dr. Jay Alberts Ph.D. Center for Neurological Restoration.

As a result of many research studies Pedaling for Parkinson’s programs like the one offered at Boothbay Region YMCA are offered at over 90 YMCAs across the country.

Cycling as well as physical exercise overall can help to reduce the symptoms associated with this illness. It works by teaching the brain to be smarter and more efficient in how it uses dopamine which helps to reduce symptoms.

This class is offered Mondays and Wednesdays at 9:15 a.m. If you, or anyone you know, is interested, please contact Abby at the Boothbay Region YMCA (ajones@brymca or 633-2855).
