Call to artists for work
River Arts in Damariscotta invites submissions for its upcoming Artists' Choice exhibition. The show encourages artists to select submissions that best express their own approach to art. This focus reflects jurors’ frequent comment that art should present an artists’ own individuality in subject, treatment and technique and not simply be an imitation of popular styles.
Artists’ Choice will run from October 19 to November 15. Entries in all media are encouraged, including sculpture, photography and assemblages. All work entered must be for sale. Wall-hung work should not exceed 40 inches in any dimension, and for safety reasons plexiglass should be used for work over 34 inches, excluding pastels.
Juror for this exhibition is Leonard Meiselman. Meiselman is an artist and a graduate of Cooper Union and the City College of New York and received additional training in art at the Skowhegan School of Art and the Cranbrook Academy in Michigan.
Meiselman has given solo exhibitions in London and New York; his paintings have also been shown in group shows in New York and Italy. After living and painting in Italy for 17 years, he returned to the U.S. and established his studio in New York City. He has recently moved his residence to Maine. Meiselman founded www.ArtCriesOut.com, a website for protest art.
Drop-off dates for Artists’ Choice, as well as pick up of works from previous shows, are Friday and Saturday, Oct. 12 and 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Early submissions for Artists’ Choice, if needed to accommodate artist’s schedules, are accepted during the gallery’s normal hours. Calls to arrange early submissions are welcome. Work should be dropped off at the River Arts Gallery at 170 Main St. (Bus. Route 1) in downtown Damariscotta.
Artists may submit up to three works for an entry fee of $15 for members, $20 for non-members. Submitted work may not have been exhibited at the River Arts gallery previously. Entry forms are available online at http://riverartsme.org as well as at the gallery when submitting. The opening reception will be on Friday, October 19 from 5 to 7 p.m. Queries and requests may be directed to River Arts at 563-1507 or by email at info@riverartsme.org. The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 to 4, and on Sundays from 10-2. River Arts is closed on Mondays.
