Capt. Richard D. Alley, 74, died peacefully at his home in Boothbay on Friday, Feb. 1, 2013.

He was born on Barters Island on April 23, 1938, the son of the late Richard E. and Vera Reed Alley. He grew up in Boothbay and attended local schools. In 1956 he was a member of the first graduating class of Boothbay Region High School. He was among the members of his class involved in the filming of the movie “Carousel.”

After high school, Richard worked locally. In the early 1960s he worked as a deputy harbor master and police officer for the town of Boothbay Harbor. He also worked as a deputy sheriff for Lincoln County.

In 1965 he began his career on the water where he would work his way up from a deck hand to captain. He worked on large yachts delivering them to Florida, the Bahamas, Gulf of Mexico, and along the Eastern Seaboard. In 1969 Richard began his career with The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory as a research vessel captain. The APL was involved in testing cutting edge Naval operations and oceanographic research.

Richard returned to Maine in 1985 where he built and operated the Boothbay Home Center and worked for Hammond Lumber Company as a local sales representative. He transitioned to semi-retirement by driving local school buses and captaining boats during the summer season.

Capt. Dick worked for Cap'n Fish's Whale Watch for more than 20 years. During this time he was able to see some amazing marine mammals. The highlights of his whale watching years included two Right whale sightings. He was always happy to share these and other stories of his time on the water.

Richard was a member of the Bay View Lodge #196 as well as a past member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Rockland. He was also an active member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1717 in Cocoa, Florida.
