Celebrate the holidays with Mozart's 'The Magic Flute'
Lincoln Theater is delighted to continue a cherished holiday tradition with a special encore presentation of The Magic Flute on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 1 p.m. This landmark production holds a special place in Met Opera history as the very first opera broadcast to movie theaters worldwide when the Live in HD series launched in 2006.
In “The Magic Flute,” Prince Tamino is saved from a monster by the Queen of the Night's three ladies, who show him a portrait of her daughter, Pamina. He falls instantly in love and is tasked with rescuing her from the supposedly evil Sarastro. However, Tamino and his bird-catcher companion, Papageno, soon discover that appearances are deceiving; the Queen of the Night is the true villain, and Sarastro is a benevolent high priest. Tamino and Pamina ultimately prove their love and courage through trials, and the Queen of the Night and her followers are banished.
Directed by Tony Award-winner Julie Taymor (The Lion King), this abridged, English-language staging brings Mozart’s classic fairy tale to life with imaginative puppetry, fantastical costumes, and vibrant visual storytelling. Running under two hours, the production is designed to delight audiences of all ages.
The cast features an accomplished ensemble, including tenor Matthew Polenzani as the noble Tamino and baritone Nathan Gunn as the ever-charming bird catcher Papageno. Mozart’s beloved score shines throughout, highlighted by the Queen of the Night’s iconic showstopping aria.
Tickets for this holiday encore are just $15 for adults, $13 for Lincoln Theater members, and $5 for youth 18 and under and are available now through Lincolntheater.org. Remaining tickets will be sold at the door a half an hour before showtime. What a great opportunity to enjoy a little extra holiday magic and introduce the family to the wonderful world of opera.
