Chair yoga event at St. Philip’s Church
A chair yoga event will be held at St. Philip’s Church, 12 Hodge St. in Wiscasset at 10 a.m. Sept. 26.
As part of the yoga community's dedication of a statewide initiative on Sept. 26, to raise funds to ease hunger, Susan Gallagher, the Westport Island resident and certified yoga instructor, is developing new skills and is eager to share them in benefit of Wiscasset Feed Our Scholars, a program to provide healthy packs of food to children experiencing food insecurity attending Wiscasset Elementary School.
This encompasses students from the towns of Wiscasset, Westport Island, and Alna. The charge for the workshop is by donation.
According to the Lakshmi Voelker Chair Yoga website, the postures, based on 5,000 year-old asanas and breathing techniques, have been modified to make them doable by all levels of fitness and ranges of motion.
Also, because the postures incorporate yoga breathing, they are more complete and more effective exercise for all, but particularly for those with limited mobility. The site claims that “(t)hese deep breathing techniques more fully oxygenate your body and massage your organs. This improves your energy and mental clarity while reducing pain and anxiety.”
No matter the age level, ability level, mobility level, plan to start Saturday experiencing this new exercise form. No mat necessary, but participants should wear loose clothing. For further information, contact Gallagher at susan_gllghr@yahoo.com , or St. Philip’s Church at 207-882-7184.
