Coastal Senior College courses: ‘How Does Music Work?’ and ‘Singing Our Roots’
Curious people will have the opportunity to explore “How Does Music Work?” on Tuesdays, 1:30-3:15 p.m., from Sept. 15 to Nov. 3, in person at the Midcoast Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (MUUF) Community Hub in Damariscotta.
Instructor Susan Borg will guide participants as they discover how we humans create and hear sounds, how we transform sounds into melodies and harmonies, and how we preserve those melodies for others to learn. The class is active and informal. Participants are encouraged to bring their voices and any instruments they may have to explore different kinds of music making, not for performance.
This class may be taken by itself or along with “Singing Our Roots: Folk Songs From Many Cultures,” which will be offered at the same location from 3:30 to 5 p.m.
Folk songs are the everyday melodies that accompany our work, our play, special family occasions, and community events. On Tuesday afternoons, from 3:30 to 5, "Singing Our Roots" class members will gather to sing folk songs from many cultures at the MUUF Community Hub in Damariscotta, from Sept. 15 to Nov. 3.
Our American culture has roots in all the cultures of the world. Participants in “Singing Our Roots” will explore the songs their parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents sang, and also the songs we sing with our families today. Each week, participants will explore similar roots in different traditions. The focus will be on exploration, not on performance. All voices are warmly welcome!
