Community groups stay tax-exempt
Woolwich selectmen re-affirmed the tax-exempt status of two properties maintained by community organizations and amended the town’s personnel policy Monday night.
The South Woolwich Volunteer Fire Co. on Montsweag Road and Day’s Ferry Community Club on Old Stage Road will continue to be exempt from property taxes. At their Sept. 21 meeting, selectmen had agreed to look further into the groups, consulting both the Maine Revenue Service and Maine Municipal Association.
“We feel these buildings and the organizations that support them provide a valuable service to the town in their historic preservation efforts and maintaining them for the benefit of Woolwich residents and visitors,” Selectman Jason Shaw read from a prepared statement.
“We re-affirm the tax-exempt status of these organizations, which they have enjoyed since their founding.” The board’s decision was unanimous.
The Day’s Ferry Community Club is adjacent to Day’s Ferry Congregational Church. The small brick building was erected in 1837 and once served as a one-room schoolhouse and a meeting place for the Scouts. The South Woolwich Volunteer Fire Co. can trace its origin as far back as the 1940s. The one-story clapboard building once served as a schoolhouse.
Selectmen amended the town personnel policy. limiting the amount of sick time an employee can accrue to 64 hours. Current employees who have accrued more than 64 hours aren’t affected by the change. The previous provision allowed employees to accrue one sick day per month.
Selectman Dale Chadbourne noted Nequasset Park had been vandalized two weekends ago. The park’s entrance sign had been broken from its frame and the grounds damaged by a vehicle. The board is considering options for safeguarding the park including closing it for the winter.
Selectmen approved the purchase of a $6,500 Jaws-Of-Life unit for the fire department. The board also signed a mutual aid agreement between the Woolwich and Newcastle fire departments. The fire department was authorized to get a quote for repair work on the North Station.
Selectman Lloyd Coombs will be the keynote speaker at the Veterans Day event at 11 a.m., Friday, Nov. 11, at the Nequasset Meeting House. Selectman Allison Hepler will serve as the master of ceremonies for the program honoring Woolwich area veterans.
The board signed a contract with North East Mobile Health. Chairman David King Sr. said the agreement continues to be a zero-dollar deal.
Timothy Larochelle re-appointed to the Shellfish Committee in a 5-0 vote.
