CTL hosts weeklong professional development sessions
The Center for Teaching and Learning in Edgecomb hosted two groups of teacher-interns this month. The intern program is part of CTL’s mission as a demonstration school, where classroom teachers can come to observe workshop teaching from the school’s experienced educators. For 35 years now, teachers have visited Edgecomb for a week at a time to observe CTL classrooms in action and adapt the methods they learn about to their own schools.
This April, CTL teachers in grades kindergarten through fourth, Jill Cotta, Corbin Lichtinger, and Jennifer Keegan, hosted a team of colleagues from the same school in New Jersey. Middle school humanities teachers Stacey Adams and Angela Lathem-Ballard hosted a group of teachers from different schools in Kentucky, New Jersey, and North Dakota.
Interns come to CTL to observe the teachers launching each day’s writing and reading workshops with mini-lessons, conferencing with individual students and giving them personalized feedback, and facilitating sharing and group understanding at the close of each class. CTL teachers meet with interns after the classes to reflect and process, to discuss planning and structure, and to help them plan their own classroom routines and procedures to support writing and reading workshop.
The visiting teachers stay and dine locally, enjoying time in Maine and all the region has to offer, while spending their days at the school engaging in rich and immersive professional development.
The school welcomes groups of teacher-interns from all over the country and the world. More than 600 teachers from 45 states, Washington, D.C., Australia, Brazil, Canada, Ecuador, England, India, Japan, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Uganda have participated so far in the CTL intern program.
