CTL MathCounts team participates in state competition
The MathCounts team from the Center for Teaching and Learning in Edgecomb participated in the state competition which coincided with Pi Day, March 14. The event was held at Kennebec Valley Community College in Fairfield. CTL qualified to participate by placing second at the regional competition in January.
This year’s team at both regionals and states included Adeline Inman, Charlie Record, Enilea Burns, and Toby McKenzie, all seventh graders. Their volunteer coach is Nick Record, who leads the team in its once weekly meetings as a free afterschool club at CTL.
MathCounts is a national non-profit promoting mathematics and problem solving. The organization encourages students to love math and develop resilience, using problem-solving questions to help middle school kids embrace challenges—a mission consistent with CTL’s approach to math education.
Record reflected on the season: “I was proud of our group. We had a very young team, so they had to work hard to make states. They were also so supportive of each other, always bringing the cheers. I love MathCounts because it provides a space where students can see that math is fun, social, and (dare I say it) cool.”
CTL is among the smallest schools participating MathCounts locally, yet consistently qualifies to compete at the state level, in a history of school involvement in the competition that goes back to 1999.
