Cub pack, others honor veterans in Wiscasset
With grandson Garrett, 12, nearby, Bill Cossette Jr., commander of American Legion Post 54 of Wiscasset, stood on the municipal building lawn Friday morning and talked with sons Warren and Chris, Garrett’s father. The three generations together helped make the post’s annual Veterans Day observance one for the ages — all ages. So did the turnout of veterans who served as far back as World War II, Webelos and other members of Woolwich-Wiscasset Cub Pack 602 and other attendees.
Together, they sang, saluted the American flag and stood in the sun and a building wind for speeches and wreath-layings. About 50 people came. Those interviewed praised the dry weather and the involvement of the cub pack. Legion member Dale Skillin said he was very glad the pack took part. The post is a sponsor and works hard to help keep the pack going, Skillin said.
Wiscasset’s Sarah Joyce, a Webelos den leader and mother of Sullivan Joyce, 10, helped arrange the pack’s participation. Children need to meet veterans and know what they have done for the country, she said. “Being a part of this puts it at the forefront of their minds. It’s also about being part of a community.”
Fellow pack mom Courtney Poland of Woolwich was proud of son Zac, 10, who stood with the flag during the ceremony. “I love it, We need to have more of this, getting kids involved with showing veterans the respect they have earned,” she said. Asked afterward about the experience, her son said he had tried to be careful with the flag, and that he was happy.
Cossette told the crowd about a special card he was pleased to receive. His wife gave him a greeting card made for wives to give their husbands who are veterans. He didn’t know they made those, he said.
Speaker Wally Staples encouraged attendees to give to the American Disabled Veterans Foundation; and he got the crowd singing “Happy Birthday” to the Marines.
The sun occasionally went in. It came out brightly just as singer Denise Reynolds hit a high note in “America the Beautiful.” Behind her on the veterans wall were sections listing names of locals who served in the War of 1812 and the Mexican and Civil wars.
At the end of the ceremony, Cossette invited attendees to the Legion hall on Route One for refreshments and to see all the work that’s been done on the building in recent years. A grand re-opening will be held in the winter, when everyone is looking for something to do, Cossette said.
