Dawn to dusk vigil to support indigenous pipeline protest
Tue, 11/15/2016 - 9:15am
The Midcoast Friends (Quakers) Meeting invites the community to join us for a day of prayer and fasting, ending with a candlelight vigil, on Sunday, Nov. 20. The vigil focuses on profound issues facing indigenous peoples including those involved in pipeline resistance in the Midwest and our Wabanaki nations engaged in ongoing land and water sovereignty disputes.
The Friends meetinghouse, located at 77 Belvedere Rd., Damariscotta, will be open all day for silent prayer, beginning at 6:30 a.m. sunrise. A candlelight vigil on the Damariscotta-Newcastle bridge at sunset from 4:30-5:30 p.m. will conclude the day's vigil. All are welcome.
"The event is being coordinated by New England Quakers to send prayerful support to the Indigenous water protectors who are blocking continued construction of an oil pipeline in North Dakota," Andy Burt, Friends Meeting member and local climate justice activist, said. "As the oil industry is emboldened by the election of Donald Trump to move ahead aggressively with pipeline projects, such as the Dakota Access Pipeline, and our indigenous friends are courageously standing in the way, it is timely for the community to make a visible witness of support for those risking their lives to protect our Earth home. We will also hold in prayer our Maine indigenous friends facing court and public policy challenges regarding their rights to their lands and waters."
