The band is warming up, as are local ovens, in preparation for the 2019 Dough Ball and Gingerbread Spectacular at Boothbay Harbor’s historic Opera House. Reports from around the region are that both young and old, solo and groups, are beginning to work on their gingerbread creations and that the competition is heating up for this holiday tradition.

This year the holiday fun begins on Friday, Dec. 13, when the doors swing open for the gingerbread preview party also known as the Dough Ball. The evening is a fundraiser for the non-profit Opera House and includes holiday jazz by Barney Balch and the Sheepscot Quartet, as well as a bounty hors d’oeuvres created by Rick Dickinson and the Friends of the Opera House.

The Half-Baked bar will be serving cocktails, and the Friends extravagant bake sale will begin, while the real stars of the night will be the dozens of gingerbread creations designed for this year’s Gingerbread Spectacular. Get advance discounted tickets from the box office at 86 Townsend Avenue or by calling 633-5159. Members $15, regular tickets $25. Don your finest pair of antlers, and help kick-off the Gingerbread Spectacular this year. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. The judges awards are announced at 7.

On Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 14 and 15, the Opera House will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the Gingerbread Spectacular. Admission is free for all ages. Come to be amazed by the exhibit of dozens of gingerbread structures, or be dazzled by the abundantly decorated Opera House. The Friends of the Opera House bake sale will be in full swing and music will fill the house.

On Saturday, Dec. 14 at 3 p.m., the Boothbay Region Community Band performs their annual holiday concert.

Individuals or groups interested in entering this year’s Gingerbread Spectacular gingerbread house building competition may register or get additional information by calling 633-5159. Prizes will be awarded in a dozen categories from Best Traditional Design to Most Obsessive Compulsive, and from Most Hilarious to Most Delicious Looking.

The weekend long holiday party is generously sponsored by The First National Bank.
