Dresden selectmen

Dresden’s Ballard Road deemed a town way

Wed, 02/19/2020 - 4:00pm

Dresden selectmen voted Feb. 18 to keep their historic determination a public road exists on Ballard Road. Abutters will be notified that any gate or bars across the road are illegal and will need to go. The decision came after selectmen heard Jay Robbins’ research they sought into public records.

Robbins’ report will go to town attorney Jessica Avery, who is handling the current legal action seeking to determine the town owns the road.

Robbins, of Richmond, has done title work for over 40 years. He conducted research with courthouses, historical societies and deeds offices and town offices, and provided the board with an extensive history of the road, dating to 1753. Robbins concluded Ballard Road is a three rod (49 and a half feet wide) town way, and is the town’s.

Also Feb. 18, after Selectman Allan Moeller Sr. discussed the need for roadside cutting of trees, the board voted to have a contractor work for up to two days starting with Glasheen, Popp and Reed Rock roads. Moeller had gotten a $100 an hour quote from contractor Bob Anair of Richmond.

The board appointed Lorna Mackinnon to the Board of Appeals and David W. Brown to the Budget Review Committee; approved the use of Pownalborough Hall for the Democratic Caucus March 8, with the $100 rental fee waived; and decided to have a survey in the Dresden Communicator ask about holding town meeting at night or in the day.

Due to Dresden going to the polls Tuesday, March 3, the board will meet next at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 4 at Pownalborough Hall.
